Special Section — Marine Controlled-source Electromagnetic Methods an Introduction to Marine Controlled-source Electromagnetic Methods for Hydrocarbon Exploration

چکیده
Early development of marine electromagnetic methods, dating back about 80 years, was driven largely by defense/military applications, and use for these purposes continues to this day. Deepwater, frequency-domain, electric dipole-dipole, controlled-source electromagnetic CSEM methods arose from academic studies of the oceanic lithosphere in the 1980s, and although the hydrocarbon exploration industry was aware of this work, the shallow-water environments being explored at that time were not ideally suited for its use. Low oil prices and increasingly successful results from 3D seismic methods further discouraged investment in costly alternative geophysical data streams. These circumstances changed in the late 1990s, when both Statoil and ExxonMobil began modeling studies and field

Frequency domain 3-D electromagnetic migration and imaging of sea-bottom geoelec- trical structures
In this paper we develop a fast 3-D electromagnetic (EM) migration method for marine geophysical exploration. The developed migration algorithm is based on downward extrapolation of the observed EM field using a special form of finite-difference equation for the migration field. It allows us to migrate within the sea-bottom formations the EM signals observed by the sea-bottom receivers. The mig...

متن کاملReview paper: Instrumentation for marine magnetotelluric and controlled source electromagnetic sounding
We review and describe the electromagnetic transmitters and receivers used to carry out magnetotelluric and controlled source soundings in the marine environment. Academic studies using marine electromagnetic methods started in the 1970s but during the last decade these methods have been used extensively by the offshore hydrocarbon exploration industry. The principal sensors (magnetometers and ...
متن کاملThree-dimensional inversion of towed streamer electromagnetic data
A towed streamer electromagnetic system capable of simultaneous seismic and electromagnetic data acquisition has recently been developed and tested in the North Sea. We introduce a 3D inversion methodology for towed streamer electromagnetic data that includes a moving sensitivity domain. Our implementation is based on the 3D integral equation method for computing responses and Fréchet derivativ...
متن کاملA numerical comparison of time and frequency-domain marine electromagnetic methods for hydrocarbon exploration in shallow water
In shallow water the frequency domain controlled source electromagnetic method is subject to airwave saturation that strongly limits the sensitivity to resistive hydrocarbon targets at depth. It has been suggested that time-domain CSEM may offer an improved sensitivity and resolution of these deep targets in the presence of the airwave. In order to examine and test these claims, this work prese...
